General FAQs

  • YES, per federal guidelines, you must pass a DOT drug test to operate a CMV (Commercial Motor Vehicle) and also a DOT physical test.

  • Average cost runs $5192 amongst 7 of Colorado CDL schools.

  • No. Some schools only offer the training then send you to another school for testing.

  • In Colorado you can obtain a Commercial Drivers License at 18 years old. However, federal law prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from crossing state lines driving a commercial vehicle. You can obtain a CDL at 18 but can only work within the state until you reach the age of 21.

  • The type of vehicle you want to operate determines which CDL to get. Class A CDL is considered the most universal commercial driver’s license because it will allow you to drive almost any Class A or Class B vehicle. Class A CDL drivers can operate a semi or 18 wheeler (tractor trailer), truck and trailer combinations (double and triple trailers), tankers, and flatbeds. Class B CDL drivers can operate straight trucks, large buses, box trucks, and dump trucks.

  • Currently there is not a state or federal law that requires you to have a drivers license for a set length of time. There are many companies that require you to have a license for one year before obtaining a CDL, but not all of them.

  • You need a valid driver license from Colorado or another state or a commercial learner's permit. (CLP)

  • Our Class A course is based on a two week window running Monday through Friday. We leave the weekends to use as an option if a student needs more practice.

  • CDL 303 trains to the recommended standard of 80 “Behind the Wheel” hours for our full Class A CDL Course. This includes “observational time” of other students and working as a group.

  • We utilize full size conventional sleeper cabs with manual 10 speed and automatic transmissions. You will train on the same type of equipment currently in use by most of the trucking industry.

  • We do not have lodging on site but we can recommend a few local lodging options. Please call for information. AirBnB or VRBO is always an option.

  • Yes, as the training industry standard, it is one on one training. What that means is that when you are in the driver's seat, the instructor is working with you one on one. Although there may be more students in the truck, you are getting the instruction one on one.

  • You must pass 3 tests to obtain your CDL permit. General Knowledge, Combination and Air Brake tests. You must get a minimum score of 80% to pass. All of this is in the Colorado Commercial Drivers License Manual.

  • If your DUI resulted in a license suspension or revocation, you must first wait until your regular driver’s license is reinstated. Only then can you apply or reapply for a CDL.

The waiting period generally looks like this:

    • For a first DUI conviction—your CDL is disqualified for one year; and

    • For a second DUI conviction—a lifetime disqualification may apply or reinstatement may be possible after 10 years under limited conditions.

The one-year disqualification applies even if you were not driving a commercial vehicle at the time of the offense. The law treats any DUI conviction seriously when it comes to commercial driving privileges.

  • Prior to Feb 7th 2022 an individual could do the written testing for their permit and do the skills testing for their license without formal training. Many people learned on the job or got training from a friend. Moving forward, the institution doing the training must be listed on the Training Provider Registry (TPR). Completing these programs through a registered provider certifies your readiness to test at the DMV. Skills tests can’t be scheduled if you have not completed the online Theory and Behind the Wheel course through a registered provider. Its not harder just more thorough vetting.

  • NO! Some schools charge $100-$500 for the same ELDT course that we offer.

  • Yes. We train at the parking area for the Mile High Flea Market. We recently repainted our two practice areas with state approved lines.
